The EEA Joins #FinishTheJob: Why Search Fairness Is Essential For Our Sector

Every time someone searches for things to do in Barcelona, looks up food tours in Rome, or checks cultural heritage sites across Europe, a gatekeeper decides who gets found. For a tour guide, a museum, or a small operator with no other channel to be discovered, that's not a technicality. It's critical - for their business, and for the travellers around the world trying to find them.

The DMA wasn't written overnight. It took years of pressure from businesses, regulators and founders across Europe who'd reached the same conclusion: digital markets can't be fair markets when one company controls the gates. Its obligations became binding in 2024, but the case that will show whether search actually treats our sector fairly — the non-compliance investigation into Google's self-preferencing — has run past two years with no resolution. It's the sharpest test the law has faced, and the Commission cannot let it drift further. Delayed again, or worse, shelved, and every European organisation — our members included — gets the same message: the law is only a suggestion.
